In Rockingham, NC, Team Kawasaki Drag Race Champ Ricky Gadsen rode a stock, pre-production ZX-12R to a quarter-mile time of 9.52 seconds at 146.97 miles per hour. The ZX-12R was completely stock with Y2K specs, the only adjustments being a lowered front and rear end for better traction. The bike's as-run wheelbase checked in at 55.7 inches, which is only 0.8 inches than smaller the stock 56.5-inch wheelbase found on bikes that will be sold at dealers.
The ZX-12R reportedly turned in respectable eighth-mile times, but the real power hit in the top-end.
To prove that the run wasn't a fluke or just due to Gadsen's immense talent, Chip Ellis, one of Kawasaki's 600cc drag racers, climbed on the bike at the next meet in Gainsville, FL, and turned in a run of 9.57 seconds at 146.17 mph. Later, Muzzy put on one of their new ZX-12 pipes and the bike ran a time of 9.48 at 150.62 mph.
Hayabusas in the same class at Gainesville were reportedly running quarter-mile in the mid to high 9.7s.
